American climber Jim Reynolds just became the first person to free solo up and down Patagonia’s mighty Fitz Roy mountain. Preliminary scouting suggested the same, although the 100kph winds and blowing snow at 2100m made it difficult to be sure. The Andes that rise in southern Argentina just east of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field are considered by many well-travelled trekkers and climbers to be the most beautiful mountains in the world. Completing Patagonia's Fitz Roy Traverse, a journey across seven peaks and 4,000m of vertical climbing, is one of alpinism's most elusive achievements. Although this summit is reached in 3/4/5 days only, you need a month (with a guide available for you the whole month) to wait for the perfect weather window.

Fitz Roy provides some of the most enjoyable and high quality climbing to be found anywhere in the mountains. On our ascent, we first scramble easy rock and soon reach the bare ice of the lower Marconi Glacier. Thoroughly explore the Cerro Torre and Fitzroy massifs, view exotic wildlife from lakeside camps, climb to Marconi Pass, explore Glacier Torre, and ascend Cerro Marconi Norte and Cerro Velluda. We hike to Laguna Piedras Blancas and enjoy great views of the Blancas Glacier that flows from Cerro Electrico.

The first one-day ascent, all free by both climbers, of the Wave Effect (crossing Aguja Desmochada, Aguja de la Silla, and Fitz Roy), completed by Haley and Honnold in 17:07 (base of Desmochada to summit of Fitz Roy), February 6, 2016. We have plenty of time to explore the glacier and photograph the many towers that run along both sides of this remarkable valley.We make our first climb the next day on the glaciated Cerro Solo, so named because of its dramatic isolation from the main ranges.
